BEING A MENTOR

 

A mentor is “anyone who offers knowledge, insight, perspective, or wisdom that is helpful to another person in a relationship which goes beyond duty or obligation.” 

 

> Goal Settings : Ensure Goals are practical, useful and SMART

> Active Listening : Listen with the intent to understand the mentees views, their aspirations, challenges and more.

> Share Experience & Advice : You don’t have to be an expert, your perspective can make all the difference.

> Recommended Tasks and Sources : Point your mentee in the right direction, are there podcasts, articles, courses that you can recommend.

> Be Present and Responsive : Work together and let your mentee know your availability for catch-ups and check-ins. It's also good to maintain regular contact.

> Respect Confidentiality : What is discussed in a mentoring session stays in the mentoring session

> Create Independance : Nurturing curiosity and a growth mind-set will allow your mentee to be independent

> Get the Stretch : Work with you rmentee to come out of their comfort zone into stretch, build their confidence to challenge themselves.

BEING A MENTEE

 

A mentee is “anyone who wants to learn from someone who knows and seeks their valuable advice in order to grow professionally and personally through a period of guidance and support.”

 

 

> Goal Settings : Ensure Goals are practical, useful and SMART

> Honesty is the best policy : Give your mentor a clear view of where you need support, as well as your expectations and aspirations.

> Prepare, prepare, prepare : Be able to tell your mentor clearly what you want from the relationship, set your mentor up for success.

> Own IT! : When you are given advice or recommended tasks, look, listen and complete them it is for you.

> Be present and responsive : Share your availability for catch-ups and check-ins, stick to them and be present in all the meetings.

> No drama! : When receiving feedback or advice keep an open mind.

> Trust : Start with trust...

> Growth mindset : The gift of mentoring should be treated with respect and should be a mindset. Don't treat engaging, enriching, and fruitful experience!
